What’s New for 2025
As of June 5, 2025, only dogs and cats can be booked to travel in cabin. Rabbits/household birds are grandfathered only if the ticket was bought before June 5, 2025, and travel must occur by April 4, 2026. For Hawaii and international flights, only dogs and cats are permitted in the cabin.
In-Cabin Pets (Dogs & Cats)
Fee: $100 USD/CAD each way, per carrier. Space is limited; book your pet with Alaska Air Reservations as soon as you have finalized your travel plans.
Flight limits & seating
- Max carriers per flight: 3 in First Class and 8 in Main Cabin.
- You must be 18 years old or older to fly with your pet; no exit rows; pet carrier counts toward your carry-on allowance.
- Up to two same-species pets may share one carrier if they fit comfortably.
Kennel size & setup
Alaska Airlines follows USDA and IATA requirements. A soft-sided only listed: 50 17″ L x 11″ W x 9.5″ H maximum. The kennel must be leak-proof and lined with absorbent padding, ventilated, escape-proof, and fit fully under the seat in front of you.
Pet age & behavior

- Do not sedate your pet for air travel. Sedatives can be risky at altitude. If your pet is anxious, talk to your veterinarian about safer alternatives.

- Crate prep: Crate-train well in advance, line the carrier with absorbent, leak-proof material, and do not sedate your pet. If your pet is anxious, consult your veterinarian for safe alternatives.
Day-of-Travel Checklist
- Arrive early and check in at the counter with plenty of time.
- Exercise before the airport (a brisk walk/playtime for dogs).
- Final potty break in the designated pet-relief area right before boarding.
- Feeding: Skip large meals; a small meal 4 hours before the flight is okay.
- Hydration: Offer sips of water, avoid overwatering right before the flight.
