Should Pets Be Sedated for Travel?
The use of tranquilizers or sedatives to calm pets during travel is strictly prohibited.
The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) highlights the expertise of Dr. Patricia Olsen from the American Humane Association, who states:
“An animal’s natural ability to balance and maintain equilibrium is altered under sedation and when the kennel is moved, a sedated animal may not be able to brace and prevent injury.”

Potential Risks and Dangers of Sedating Pets During Flight:
Sedation can impair a pet’s ability to regulate body temperature, increasing the risk of heat stroke or hypothermia.
Sedated pets are less equipped to handle stress, medical emergencies, or changes in their environment. Additionally, the effects of altitude and air pressure changes may worsen when under sedation, potentially leading to respiratory or cardiovascular complications.
Sedatives can also negatively interact with other medications/pre-existing conditions, leading to complications and pets may experience delayed recovery or difficulty regaining full alertness after the flight.

Airline Policies on Sedated Pets:
Many airlines prohibit the transportation of sedated pets due to safety concerns that these medications can cause adverse effects.
Airlines require pets to remain fully conscious and aware during the flight to ensure they can respond to any distress or emergencies, and to confirm that the pet in question is indeed healthy and in a condition suitable for air travel.
The risk of sedation causing health complications or increasing a pet's anxiety during travel, is a key reason for airlines implementing these regulations.
All airlines reserve the discretion to deny the transport of an animal that appears to or is confirmed as having been sedated or tranquilized.
