Important Notes on Pet Travel Timelines

If you haven’t started planning your pet’s move to Belgium yet, it’s important to know that the process can take time, especially if you're coming from a high-risk rabies country. Pets from high-risk countries may need 3–4 months to meet entry requirements, while pets from low-risk rabies countries typically need 1–2 months.

Minimum Age Requirements for Importing Pets to Belgium?

Your dog or cat must be at least 15 weeks old to enter Belgium.

What Are Belgium's Dog Breed Restrictions?

While Belgium does not enforce a nationwide ban on specific dog breeds, dog ownership laws can vary by region. In Brussels, for instance, all dogs must be kept on a leash in public spaces, unless they are in a designated off-leash dog park.

Some dog breeds considered potentially dangerous are subject to mandatory muzzle requirements, although these rules may differ depending on the region. Breeds commonly affected include:

🐾 Pit Bulls
🐾 American Staffordshire Terriers
🐾 Rottweilers
🐾 Mastiffs

Even if your dog is not on the restricted breed list, a muzzle may still be required if the dog has shown aggressive behavior or has a history of incidents.

Should I Keep My Pet's Original Health Documents When Moving to Belgium?

Make sure to keep all original health documents with your pet's at all times. Do not pack or take them with you—they are your pet’s “passport” for travel!

Health Requirements For Pets To Enter Belgium

Microchip

Microchip Timing: Your pet's microchip must be implanted before receiving their most recent vaccinations.

ISO-Compliant Microchip: Ensure your pet is identified with a 15-digit, ISO-compliant microchip.

Regular Microchip Scans: Ask your veterinarian to scan your pet's microchip during every vet visit. Confirm the microchip is functioning, readable, and matches all medical records.

Avoid Travel Delays: If your pet's microchip is unreadable or its information is incorrect on paperwork, it could delay their travel plans.

What Vaccines Are Needed For Your Pet?

Rabies Vaccine

Dogs, cats, and ferrets entering Belgium must have a valid rabies vaccination that was administered by a government-accredited veterinarian. The vaccine must be at least 21 days old at the time of entry and still valid upon arrival.

A 3-year rabies vaccine is also accepted for travel to Belgium, as long as there has been no lapse in vaccination coverage.

Please note: Your pet must be at least 12 weeks old to receive their first rabies vaccine.

Additional Vaccines

While general vaccinations are not mandatory for entry into Belgium, they are strongly recommended to protect your pet’s health during travel. Keeping your dog or cat up to date on core vaccines helps prevent exposure to common illnesses in transit or at boarding facilities.

Recommended Vaccinations for Dogs:

  • DHPP+L – Protects against Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza, and Leptospirosis

  • Bordetella (Kennel Cough) – Recommended within 6 months of travel

Recommended Vaccinations for Cats:

  • FVRCP – Protects against Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, and Panleukopenia

These vaccinations help reduce the risk of illness and ensure a safer, smoother journey for your pet.

Rabies Titer Test (FAVN-OIE)

For pets coming from high-risk rabies countries, a blood sample must be taken by a government-accredited veterinarian at least 30 days after the most recent rabies vaccination. This sample is then sent to an approved laboratory for rabies antibody testing (titer test).

Your dog or cat will be eligible to enter Belgium 3 months after the date of the blood sample collection, provided the test results meet the required antibody levels.

Important:

  • If your pet fails the blood test, they must be re-vaccinated against rabies, wait another 30 days or more, and then undergo a new blood draw for retesting.

  • Rabies titer test results can take 4 to 6 weeks or longer to be processed and returned by the laboratory.
