How to Move Your Pet to Canada: A Guide For Pet Parents
Understanding Quarantine Requirements for Pets Entering Singapore
Rabies-Free Countries (Category 1):
Pets arriving in Singapore from rabies-free countries, with full compliance to veterinary regulations and in good health, can avoid quarantine.
Rabies Risk Countries (Categories 2 and 3):
- Category 2: Pets from rabies-risk countries may undergo a mandatory 10-day quarantine upon arrival in Singapore.
- Category 3: Pets from high-rabies-risk countries must complete a mandatory 30-day quarantine.
Plan Ahead to Avoid Delays:
Quarantine facilities in Singapore fill up quickly, so it’s essential to plan your pet’s relocation well in advance to secure availability.
Should I Keep My Pet's Original Health Documents When Moving to Singapore?
Make sure to keep all original health documents with your pet's at all times. Do not pack or take them with you—they are your pet’s “passport” for travel!
What Pets Are The Pet Restrictions?
Restricted Dog Breeds for Import into Singapore:
The following dog breeds are not permitted for import into Singapore: Pit Bull (including American Pit Bull Terrier, American Pit Bull, and Pit Bull Terrier), American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Bulldog, and any crosses between these breeds and others.
Other restricted breeds include Akita, Neapolitan Mastiff, Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, Boerboel, and Perro de Presa Canario.
Restricted Cat Breeds for Import into Singapore:
If importing a Bengal or Savannah cat, you must provide documentation confirming that your Bengal cat is at least a fifth-generation cross from the ancestral Prionailurus bengalensis (Bengal) or Leptailurus serval (Savannah).
Health Requirements For Pets To Enter Singapore
Microchip
Microchip Timing: Your pet's microchip must be implanted before receiving their most recent vaccinations.
ISO-Compliant Microchip: Ensure your pet is identified with a 15-digit, ISO-compliant microchip.
Regular Microchip Scans: Ask your veterinarian to scan your pet's microchip during every vet visit. Confirm the microchip is functioning, readable, and matches all medical records.
Avoid Travel Delays: If your pet's microchip is unreadable or its information is incorrect on paperwork, it could delay their travel plans.
What Vaccines Are Needed For Your Pet?
Rabies VaccineTo enter Singapore from a high-risk rabies country, your pet’s rabies vaccination must meet these requirements:
- The primary vaccine must be at least 28 days old before proceeding to the next step.
- Alternatively, an approved booster vaccine must be administered before the primary vaccine (valid for 1 year) expires.
- The rabies vaccine must be administered by a Government Accredited Veterinarian.
Note: A Rabies Vaccine for pet travel from a Rabies-Free country to Singapore is not mandatory, however, it is highly recommended for your pet(s)' safety during their travels.
Additional Vaccines
General vaccinations must follow manufacturer guidelines and be administered at least 14 days before travel to Singapore. Vaccines must also be unexpired at the time of entry.
For Dogs:
- DHPP+L: Protects against Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza, and Leptospirosis.
- Bordetella (Kennel Cough): Should be given within the last 6 months.
For Cats:
- FVRCP: Protects against Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, and Panleukopenia.
These optional vaccines help protect your pet from common diseases, ensuring a safer travel experience.
FAVN-OIE Rabies Titre Test
A government-accredited veterinarian must collect a blood sample at least 28 days after the most recent rabies vaccination and send it to an approved laboratory for testing. There is a 90-day waiting period from the blood draw date (with a passing result) before your pet can enter Singapore.
The blood sample must be collected by a government-accredited veterinarian and sent to a WOAH reference laboratory in a Schedule 1 or 2 country, recognized by the Department of Agriculture of the country of origin.
NOTE: It can take 4-6+ WEEKS to receive the rabies titre test results back from the laboratory.
External and Internal Parasite Treatments
Your pet(s) must be treated for external and internal parasites 2 to 7 days before export to Singapore.
- The treatment must target external parasites (fleas and ticks) and internal parasites (nematodes and cestodes).
- Ensure your veterinarian records these treatments on the Singaporean Health Certificate.
