Important Notes on Pet Travel Timelines

The time needed for your pet to fulfill travel health requirements varies depending on the destination. If you're traveling from a rabies-free country to Finland, plan for at least 1-2 months of preparation. For pets coming from a high-risk rabies country, allow 3-4 months. It's essential to begin the process early to secure your preferred travel date.

What Are Finland's Pet Restrictions?

Finland does not impose breed restrictions on cats or dogs for importation.

Should I Keep My Pet's Original Health Documents When Moving to Finland?

Make sure to keep all original health documents with your pet's at all times. Do not pack or take them with you—they are your pet’s “passport” for travel!

Health Requirements For Pet's To Enter Finland

Microchip

Microchip Timing: Your pet's microchip must be implanted before receiving their most recent vaccinations.

ISO-Compliant Microchip: Ensure your pet is identified with a 15-digit, ISO-compliant microchip.

Regular Microchip Scans: Ask your veterinarian to scan your pet's microchip during every vet visit. Confirm the microchip is functioning, readable, and matches all medical records.

Avoid Travel Delays: If your pet's microchip is unreadable or its information is incorrect on paperwork, it could delay their travel plans.

What Vaccines Are Needed For Your Pet?

Rabies Vaccine

The rabies vaccination must be at least 21 days old and valid for one year at the time of entry into Finland. This vaccine must either be administered at the same time as your pet's 15-digit ISO-compliant microchip or after the microchip is implanted, depending on your country of origin.

Ensure your pet was microchipped after their most recent rabies vaccine. If not, they must receive another rabies vaccination to meet Finland's entry requirements.

Additional Vaccines

While general vaccinations are not mandatory for pets traveling to Finland, they are highly recommended for the safety and well-being of your pet during travel.

For Dogs:

  • DHPP+L: Protects against Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza, and Leptospirosis.
  • Bordetella (Kennel Cough): Should be given within the last 6 months.

For Cats:

  • FVRCP: Protects against Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, and Panleukopenia.

These optional vaccines help protect your pet from common diseases, ensuring a safer travel experience.

Blood Test

A Government Accredited Veterinarian must collect a blood sample at least 30 days after the most recent rabies vaccination and send it to an approved laboratory for testing.

Note: It may take 4-6 weeks to receive the rabies titer test results from the laboratory.

Tapeworm Treatment (Dogs Only)

The tapeworm treatment must be administered no less than 24 hours and no more than 120 hours (within 1-5 days) before your dog enters Finland if traveling from a low-risk rabies country, or no less than 24 hours and no more than 48 hours (1-2 days) before entry if coming from a high-risk rabies country.

A Government Accredited Veterinarian must administer the tapeworm treatment and record it on the Finnish EU Health Certificate.
