What to Do When You’re Nervous About Relocating Your Pet for the First Time

Pet Relocation 101: Tips to Ease Your Anxieties When Your Pet’s on the Move

Moving can be an anxiety-inducing experience for people. From packing and transporting furniture to arranging internet services and updating addresses, the list never seems to end. Ensuring the safety and comfort of your beloved pet amidst all these tasks can add an extra layer of stress.

If you’re feeling anxious about your pet’s first journey, know that you’re not alone!  In fact, according to a CertaPet study, they found that 47% of Americans experience separation anxiety when they are away from their dogs. So, it’s completely normal to feel this way.

To prepare yourself for your pet’s next big adventure, here are some steps you can take to ease your anxieties:

  • Communicate With Your Pet Relocation Counselor

Ask questions and communicate any concerns you may have, with your designated Pet Relocation Counselor (PRC). They will be able to provide you with information about your pet’s travel process and ensure the safety and comfort of your pet during transit.

  • Prepare Your Pet

Help your pet become familiar with their travel crate or carrier well in advance of the move. Do this by leaving it in a common area of your home with the door open. Place treats or toys inside to encourage your pet to explore and feel comfortable. You can also put his/her favorite blanket inside to get them used to the idea of sleeping inside the crate or carrier.

Spending at least 5-10 minutes a day in their crate or carrier and rewarding your pet with treats and attention will not only ease their travel anxieties but also reassure you that they are comfortable.

  • Follow Pre-Travel Instructions

Follow any pre-travel instructions provided to you by your PRC, such as proper exercise and diet before travel or ensuring your pet is up-to-date on vaccinations. By following your PRC’s instructions carefully, you can rest assured that your pet will arrive at your new home without any hassles.

  • Stay Informed

Stay in touch with your PRC throughout their journey, to get updates on your pet’s status and location. Knowing your pet is safe and being cared for can help ease your anxiety. WorldCare Pet offers a 24/7 WhatsApp group to stay informed on your pet’s journey and for added peace of mind.
