“Can my pet eat on the plane?”
“Can my pet drink water while flying?”
These are common questions we hear from pet parents, yet they’re often overlooked when preparing for air travel. While humans are offered snacks or full meals depending on flight length, it works a little differently for pets.
At WorldCare Pet, we’ve helped relocate thousands of pets globally over the last 25 years, and we always offer the same expert advice when it comes to food and water during air travel.
Can My Pet Drink Water on the Plane?
Yes, your pet should always have access to water while flying. Hydration is critical for your pet’s safety and comfort during air travel.
Your pet’s travel crate should include:
- A water bowl or pail (plastic or metal) attached securely to the inside of the crate
- A drip water bottle can also be mounted above the bowl as an extra option
Make sure the bowls are filled and securely fastened before departure.
Pro Tip: Freeze water in your pet’s travel bowl before the flight. This ensures a slow melt and steady access to fresh water during their journey.
Can My Pet Eat During a Flight?
While pets can be fed during layovers, we recommend limiting food intake before the flight. A near-empty stomach helps reduce the risk of nausea or discomfort.
Here’s what we advise for feeding your pet during air travel:
- Feed your pet a few hours before the flight—not immediately before departure
- Include a ziplock bag of your pet’s favorite dry food (enough for the number of days they’ll be traveling)
- Feeding may take place during layovers or stopovers, but fresh water should be available at all times
Feeding & Hydration Tips Before the Flight
- Provide a light meal a couple hours before travel
- Let your pet drink water before heading to the airport
- Consider your pet’s age, size, health, and routine diet when planning pre-flight meals
Feeding & Hydration Tips After the Flight
For dogs especially:
- Offer small portions of food and water (e.g., ⅓ of their usual amount) once your pet is home.
- Allow a rest period, then offer another ⅓ portion of both about two hours later.
- Avoid rapid eating or drinking, as it can lead to bloating
Avoid overfeeding or overhydrating after travel as this can cause digestive upset or discomfort.
