Moving or flying with a pet comes with lots of logistics. One common question we hear from pet parents: “Will my pet need boarding during the move?”
Short answer: sometimes. When a routing requires an overnight, inspections fall outside business hours, or weather disrupts flights, short-term boarding keeps your pet safe, comfortable, and on schedule. Your Pet Relocation Counselor (PRC) will handle all arrangements with vetted facilities.
What Is Pet Boarding?
Pet boarding is a professional service in which dogs and cats stay at a licensed facility, overnight or for the day, staffed by trained caregivers. Facilities fill up in summer and around the holidays, so we secure space early when it’s likely to be needed. In these facilities, pets receive regular feedings, supervised playtime, comfortable sleeping areas, and appropriate bathroom breaks.
When Boarding Is Required
- Overnights between flights. Some routings can’t be completed same-day; pets can’t remain in cargo areas overnight.
- After-hours arrivals. If a flight lands when customs, vet inspectors, or agents are closed, pets stay at an approved facility until the next business day.
- Weather embargoes & safety holds. Heat, cold, or storms can delay departure; pets wait safely until the weather window opens.
- Travel delays are possible. Stay informed and plan ahead to minimize disruption to your pet’s journey.

- Regulatory stops. Some destinations require government holds, quarantine, or vet inspections that aren’t immediate.
- Missed connections or cancellations. If plans change mid-journey, pets lodge with a partner facility while we rebook.
When Boarding Is Recommended
- Pre-flight staging. Staying near the departure airport avoids long same-day drives and gives flexibility if airlines adjust timing.
- Paperwork timing. While import permits or endorsements finalize, short boarding prevents last-minute scrambles.
- Seasonal & brachycephalic planning. In summer/winter or for snub-nosed breeds with limited flight windows, boarding supports safer early-morning/late-evening departures.
- Owner logistics. If housing isn’t ready (move-out/move-in gaps, pet-restricted rentals), boarding bridges the days.
- Welfare monitoring. Seniors, anxious pets, or pets on meds benefit from staff observing appetite, hydration, and kennel comfort pre/post-flight.
What Boarding Looks Like with Our Partners
- Secure dog runs or catteries; dogs receive regular relief breaks per facility policy, fresh water, and meals per your instructions.
- Medication administration if authorized; daily notes on appetite and temperament.
- Professional transport to/from the airport handled by our local, vetted agents.
Not the same as quarantine. Private boarding is distinct from government-mandated quarantine. Some countries require quarantine regardless of routing.
How We Set Expectations
To protect your pet and keep the schedule on track, we may use short-term boarding if flights require an overnight, if weather or airline changes occur, or if inspections happen outside business hours. We’ll confirm in advance whenever possible and update you promptly if plans change.
